Science, in the culturalist account, is not a citadel separate from society, glorying in its well-guarded moat that keeps out all “polluting” cultural values. Instead, like the rest of the human condition, science is a cyborg―part nature, part culture; part reason, part myth.2 Culture is not a pollutant to be isolated, turned into a testable hypothesis and removed if false. But it is the condition for doing science. Reality and reason only become manifest against the background of cultural meanings, and find expression only through the metaphors and imagery of culture.
